PortCon Day Two

Yesterday was the first full blown day of PortCon 2013!

For me, conventions usually pass by the days hitting up the vendors room and Artist Alley, then I go to the 18+ panels at night. For the first time I was not tempted to buy everything that I saw, partially because a lot of vendors I had been looking forward to did not return (after five or so years of consecutive con going) because they sold mostly bootlegs. Bootlegs are bad. I happen to spot some beautiful Ball Jointed Dolls. And they happened to be on sale.

I think we can all assume what happened.

This is Nasia, my new Tender Bee-A (DoD).

For the first half of the day I was in my Guu cosplay. It consisted of a skirt (TJ Maxx; dyed with RIT), yellow sash (Marden's), and my new favourite wig (EpicCosplay). My pokute is handmade with left over cloth from the sash.

Panel going clothes included key patterned shirt (Forever XXI), a lace skirt (eBay), and over-bust corset (Corset Story).

Expect today's update tomorrow.

See you then.

PortCon Day One

It is rather odd for bloggers to take their readers on trips for their first actual post. Though you don't know me very well yet, I hope that you enjoy my recountings of the convention.

This is one of the times I mentioned last night in which my love of Japanese culture and it's different medias (anime and manga, specifically,) will mingle with the whole idea of a "fashion" blog. It's my fifth year attending the annual PortCon Maine. It originally was a brithday present each year from my Mum, but my friends and I still keep the tradition. This year is the first that I will bring two different cosplays and a Lolita coord. Before, I brought one character (perhaps with multiple outfits,) and usually shed it off by lunch. The reason being I always choose cosplays in which I hurt myself, usually with heels. This year I brought Guu (from Haré+Guu) as well as my rendition of Emilie Autumn's Scavenger.

So, today is day one of my adventure. After work I toddled to the convention center (conveniently located mere minutes away) and checked in to the hotel by myself for the first time. There isn't much planned for today, which I deemed a non-cosplay casual day.

Today's outfit consisted of my new shirt from Miss Allegra (H&M), my only fitted skirt (Walmart?), and my trusty bike shorts (QVC).

For the next few days, there will be cosplay and my "casual" outfits, as well as some lovely updates on the Con happenings.

See you then.

Primo Incontro

First and foremost, this is a labour of self love.

I always knew it would be a difficult trek, running a blog, but I have always had a deep urge to do so. So, today, on the first day of my twentieth year on Earth, I decided to go for it.

Things to keep in mind - This is going to mostly be a Personal Fashion blog, but I always have so much going on in my life and so many interests that will overlap into whatever I do. This is for fun, so don't place all your trust and energy onto the things I write. Enjoy what I have to offer, since I have an eclectic style and diverse interests, so you might stumble upon some lovely thing you never knew about or connect to. That in itself is a wonder of the world.

Enough of the disclaimer.

My name is Brittney and I live in the Middle of Nowhere, Maine (which is about 45 minutes removed from the metropolis of Portland.) I grew up in a military family, so I moved about a lot. Eventually we moved back to Maine when I was 6 and made it our permanent home. As a child I would dress myself by putting on 3 or 4 dresses on, one a top the other. Whether it was that or my deep love of dressing up my Barbies and cutting their hair that really solidified my passion for individualized fashion, it's hard to say. Aside from that, I always had an interest in Japan since I was young and I grew up watching Salior Moon and Gundam Wing. When I got older, these little things mixed with a love of the Gothic subculture, then eventually Victorian fashion and Lolita. I grew and began to form an aesthetic style that pleased me, something my parents and friends are proud to say is my own brand of fashion.

I'd like to think I live up to the title of "individual."

In high school, my passion for theatre was ignited and I had many amazing opportunities for to develop as a writer, an actor, and a director. I am currently chasing a dream at the local Uni as a Theatre major. Here I also got to experiment with costuming, particularly sewing.

Sewing is something I have a love and hate relationship with, going back to the 3rd grade when we made Underground Railroad Quilts.  I never sewed again until my senior year, when I took a Fashion Marketing class at the Technical school in Portland. It was here I learned a majority of my skills, most of which are composed of improvising with the cloth and thread. Whether or not it works is mostly case by case. As my best friend, Allegra, says, "It's another sewing adventure with Brittney."

They usually end with a few f-bombs and me crumpled on the floor in a ball.

Let's see where all of this takes us in future posts.
